In January 2026, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) introduced a revised TOEFL iBT that reflects contemporary academic and professional communication. The assessment retains its four-skill structure while incorporating adaptive design, authentic everyday tasks, and a clarified reporting scale. Structure
The four sections
All candidates complete the same four sections in a fixed sequence. Each section corresponds to a distinct communicative context encountered in university life.
Listening

Revision
Principal changes introduced in 2026
Existing preparation literature frequently describes the former examination. Material that does not acknowledge the January 2026 revision should be regarded as obsolete.
Authentic scope
The assessment is no longer confined to academic prose. Everyday genres — correspondence, announcements, institutional notices — are examined alongside scholarly texts.
Adaptive calibration
Reading and Listening employ a routing stage followed by a difficulty-matched module. Speaking and Writing remain uniform for all candidates, ensuring direct comparability.
Transparent reporting
Performance is reported on an interpretable band scale with direct correspondence to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Transitional arrangement
During the transitional period, official reports include a comparable value on the retired scale, enabling institutions that have not yet revised their published thresholds to interpret results without disruption. Previously issued scores retain their standard validity.
Implication for preparation
Candidates are advised to direct preparation toward task familiarity — particularly adaptive Reading and Listening and the reconfigured Speaking interview — as reported bands directly reflect performance on these revised formats.

Delivery modes
Administered at authorised test centres and as a remotely proctored Home Edition under live supervision. Content is equivalent across modes.
Sectional sequence
Sections are presented in the invariant order of Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Candidates are advised to reserve adequate concentration for the concluding interview.
Conduct of the test
Note-taking is permitted. The Listening section proceeds sequentially; review of prior stimuli is generally not available.
Institutional recognition
Results are accepted by universities and professional bodies internationally. Applicants should verify the band requirement and corresponding CEFR level stipulated by each receiving institution.

Frequently raised enquiries
Does the revised format present a reduced level of difficulty?
The revision reduces duration rather than demand. Adaptive calibration directs proficient candidates to more demanding modules, while unfamiliar task types require dedicated familiarisation. Prior-format preparation is therefore only partially transferable.
Do results issued under the former scale remain valid?
Affirmative. Previously issued results remain valid for their prescribed period and are interpreted through the official concordance. Current reports additionally provide a comparable retired-scale value throughout the transition.
May legacy preparation materials be retained?
For foundational language development, yes. For procedural readiness, only materials revised after January 2026 — including PureExam's current-format assessments — accurately represent the examination.
